OBSF Referees do our region proud

10 Dec 2014

Just a brief note about the performance of the Referees from Oceania at the IBSF World Championships in Bangalore. During the Championships the Referees were all assessed twice by the 2 Tutors Steve Starkie (Eng) and Ger Murray (Ire). From those results the matches in the Knock out stages were awarded, and all those achieving a mark of 120 or better out of a possible 145 were all presented with an IBSF Referees badge. All OBSF representatives received an IBSF Referees badge.

I am very pleased to advise everybody that our OBSF Referees all performed well and all 5 of our representatives ended up in the top 14 out of 40 referees. Indeed we had 4 in the top 10 and 2 in the top 5 which is a very creditable performance for such a small region.

From this Peggy Li refereed the Women’s final, John Ivett and Jonathan Cavanagh both refereed semi finals in the Men’s and Masters respectfully.

John and Kim Ivett became the first father daughter referees to officiate together at the same World Championships.

Special mention has to be made of the performance of Jonathan Cavanagh who in his first World Championships and as a Class 3 referee was ranked 9th out of the 40 referees, ahead of many higher accredited Referees both Class 2 and 1. He did both PNG and the OBSF proud and will I am sure be one of our representatives at many future Championships. Having spoken to the tutors in Bangalore about Jonathan and his performance there will be a recommendation from them for him to be considered for an upgrade to Class 2 when it can be arranged.
